Louis Poulsen´s Showroom

Louis Poulsen is a Danish lighting company established in 1874, and is born out of the Scandinavian design tradition, where form follows function. The function and design of their lamps is tailored to reflect and support the rhythm of the natural light. Since their first collaboration with Poul Henningsen in 1924, his view of the dualities between design and light has influenced their philosophy of light. Any detail in the design has a purpose. Any design starts and ends with light.

The new showroom and administration center for Louis Poulsen´s business is situated in an 250 years old rehabilitated building at the popular Holmen area, close to the canal just opposite the city centre. The impressive and majestic building earlier housed the Navy´s material command and the defense command.

A large and inspiring showroom is situated on the ground floor of the building, with high ceilings and lots of design stories and exhibitions that will change several times a year. Further up in the three story building you will experience that the whole house is a demonstration of Louis Poulsen’s impressive range of lightning design, from bathrooms, meeting rooms and stairways, to the large open-plan offices.

– My starting point is always the building, the architecture and its users. Since this is a listed building, it has required a deep understanding and respect for the building to create a lighting that gathers and highlight the architecture and the different functions of the rooms. In this case, it is about creating a lighting that is comfortable and well-functioning for our employees and guests, as well as playing together with the building’s architecture, history and material selection, says Anders Strarup Jensen, Lighting Advisor at Louis Poulsen.
